40thanniversary

The Robertson County Historical Society & Museum Director David Allen and curator Charlotte Reedy have been working hard to get the newest exhibit ready for the grand opening of The Robertson County Players 40th Anniversary exhibit, on March 22. The exhibit which promises a treasure trove of memorabilia from the earliest days of the Players will include costumes, props, cast photos, programs, posters, and much, much more says curator Reedy. When we first started planning the exhibit we knew we should have quite a bit of historical items but had no idea we would near fill up the museum first floor. Many of these items have not been seen publicly for 40 years. We will also have available for viewing DVD recordings of such popular early productions including The Sound of Music and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown plus audio recordings of the first musicals the Players performed – the 1980 production of Oklahoma and a 1981 performance of The Music Man.

One unexpected treasure that came out of the search for memorabilia came from long time RCP member Sandy Ramsey. As Ramsey relates the story, in the early days of the RCP, the late Jane Burnett of Springfield served as the costume manager for many of the productions. She in fact would scout high and low looking for all sorts of costumes from gowns and dresses for the women to hats and suits for the men. Somewhere along the way, Jane was given a beautiful antique emerald cape. Obviously to be worn by a woman but was of such craftsmanship and delicate design not suitable for any rough and tumble play or musical. It was stored for many years and then when Jane decided to retire from her RCP costume duties it was passed along to me. Since then, we’ve had experts guess the cape to have been designed and made around 1880. Since it cannot and should not be worn, the RCP is donating the priceless cape to the Robertson County Historical Society where it will be on display at the museum.

On March 22 The Robertson County Players will host a reception honoring the opening of the 40th Anniversary exhibit beginning at 6:30 pm at the RCHS museum. All members of the Robertson County Historical Society and all members of the Robertson County Players are invited. The event is being catered by Sandy Ramsey and Burdett’s Tea Room in Springfield.
